Alex came to write ‘The Whinging Pom: Tales from the immigration womb’ in 2010 as a coping mechanism after having emigrated from London to the Gold Coast, Queensland. Alex moved into his in-laws’ house with his wife and unborn child. He missed his British family, friends, the pub culture, smoked mackerel, and even the appalling weather. Writing the book became Alex's outlet: a cathartic escape to soothe his sunburned pommy soul. He started to view his son’s imminent Aussie life as a metaphor for occupying his own, different womb. Alex was also waiting to grow: not only as a father but also as a man needing acceptance into the Queensland lifestyle.
